Muhammed is in Year 5 and has been reading online weekly with Learn to Love to Read volunteer, Sarah, for a year. Here his mother, Naima, talks about how with Sarah’s help, Muhammed has increased both his reading enjoyment and ability.
Naima first found about Learn to Love to Read when she went to a coffee morning at her children’s primary school. With four children and older family members in her household, it was difficult to find time to read with her children daily and she noticed that Muhammed was struggling in a way that her other children didn’t.
Sarah reads with Muhammed for 30 minutes every week over Zoom. She shares a book from a graded online reading library which Muhammed then reads to her. They spend time chatting about the books they read and he particularly likes the variety of books on offer.
Naima has noticed a real difference in Muhammed’s reading ability over the last year and comments: “He enjoys reading more and his school report also confirms that he has gone a grade higher in reading.”
Through listening to the sessions herself, Naima also feels better equipped to support Muhammed. “I have learned what kind of questions I can ask after reading a book,” she reflects.
Naima is grateful to Sarah and the team at Learn to Love to Read and would definitely recommend the online sessions to other families:
“Thank you for all the hard work and effort you are putting in to help kids with reading. I cannot thank you enough. Please keep spreading this love of reading!”
