We met Amtul, a single mother, and her daughter when she came to our early literacy, Sounds, Songs and Stories sessions. Like many of our new mums, we had to show her how to sit with her daughter to read a book and encourage her to engage her child in conversation. She learnt new skills to support her child’s reading at home. With our encouragement and direction, Amtul made enormous efforts to invest in her daughter’s learning. By the time Amtul’s daughter was in Year 1 her reading level exceeded her age expectation and she was one of the most advanced readers in her class, needing no support from our volunteer team. Amtul says: ‘My daughter would not doing so well without the input and encouragement given by Learn to Love to Read.’
