We worked with Amyn and Rahim, two boys from a Syrian family, when they had recently arrived in the UK. The school asked us to give them one-to-one support in Year 1.

When our work began, both boys were reading at below expected level. However, once their interest was caught by our volunteers, they made great progress. Their parents also engaged very positively in supporting them at home, hearing them read frequently and making regular visits to the local library. After a year, their reading exceeded expected levels for their age and they continue to flourish as they progress through the school. All that was needed was a little additional one-to-one support at this crucial point in their education.

Their mother says: 'It's said that you can never be wise unless you love reading. Thanks, Learn to Love to Read, for your great efforts with Amyn and Rahim. Their reading levels has been dramatically changed by your support.'
